A Shopping Guide of El Born. Meet the Artisans

A staple of bohemian and historical Barcelona, El Born has a six-centuries-long-established tradition of craftsmanship and its spirit of creating unique pieces of fashion, jewellery, bags or household items has remained intact.

About

Hi, I am Ioana, and I like to travel. Over the years, I have called ‘home’ some ten cities across Europe including Lisbon, Bilbao, Amsterdam and Milan, until I fell in love in Barcelona, where I am based for the third time now. I have a twelve-years background in architecture, and I like to capture nice stories, patterns and colours around me. And to live by the sea. The idea of Rutes de Barcelona is to design and customize routes of the city that mix and match architecture and lifestyle, art and food, past and present. Google maps coming up soon!

Feeling like kids unable to decide which icecream to pick, while having a... hummus tasting. These are the "cucuruchos de hummus" - tasty cornets with avocado, beetroot, chickpeas and lentils. At @vivantbar. . . . #taste #enjoy #discover #barcelona #rutesdebarcelona #healthy #hummus #dinner
I love early mornings in the city. This is Barna Dawn, a city portrait created by Dutch artist Yvonne Michiels. She went up to the Bunkers, one early morning, to take photos of the city and then created this beautiful collage. Barna Dawn is part of Michiels' City Lights series including portraits of London, Milan or the NYC. . . . art by @yvonne_michiels gallery @villadelartegalleries . . . #see #enjoy #discover #barcelona #rutesdebarcelona #photography #art #collage #portrait #barna #dawn
Popularly named La Peixera (the fish bowl) for its huge oval dining room window over Avinguda Diagonal, this house is today the headquarters of Circulo Ecuestre, an exclusive club founded back in 1856 by leading figures in the financial and political scene of Barcelona united by a common interest, horse riding. The house won in 1911 Barcelona's award for the best building of the year and was built by Joan Josep Hervàs i Arizmendi, Catalan architect who worked in Manila as municipal architect, for Luis Pérez Samanillo, a Manila-born entrepreneur. It was known as 'the big house' or the 'Rothschild house', and it was the first in Barcelona to be built with a reinforced concrete structure, in 1927. The developers were marquis (Pobla de Claramunt, Balbina Mas and Antoni Miquel i Costas) and the house was, for many years, Hotel Diagonal Tuset. The proportions are monumental, recalling the French Beaux-Arts style. The interior offers a splendid oval patio with Ionic capitels, classical sculptures, cast iron railings and is crowned by an oval stained glass skylight, while the entrance is designed in Modernista style. The house is designed by Domènec Sugrañes i Gras, architect who frequently collaborated with Antoni Gaudí even though their styles were quite different. . . #see #enjoy #discover #barcelona #rutesdebarcelona #diagonal #edificimasdemiquel #architecture #beauxarts #style #interior #design #noucentista #stainedglass #skylight #modernista #entrance
Built in 1898 by architect Antoni Rovira i Rabassa, Casa Codina stands on Passeig de Gràcia right between Gaudí's La Pedrera and Antoni Rovira's other jewel, Casa Ramon Casas, built in 1894 and source of inspiration for Codina. Today the house, which belonged to a relative of Ramon Casas, engineer Josep Codina i Prats, is the store of @rabatjewellery. a beautiful store on two levels in a completely restored modernista house, and with a charming and generous interior patio: the 'massimo dutti' store is a must stop on passeig de gràcia. it is definitely on my list of favourite houses in barcelona! formerly the residence of catalan painter ramon casas, designed by architect antoni rovira i rabassa in 1894, this architectural jewel offers a carved stone facade with exquisite details and an interior where all the original finishes, including mosaics, columns, ironworks and sgraffito, have been beautifully restored. . . . read all about the ramon casas house on the website, on the #10modernistbuildingsyoushouldknow route. . . . #see #enjoy #discover #barcelona #rutesdebarcelona #passeigdegràcia #casaramoncasas #modernist #architecture #design #lifestyle #fashion
